 SfNIRS_Logo_#3smAnd the winner is …
After three months and 151 votes we are pleased to announce that Logo #3 is the winner of the Logo Design Competition. Logo #3 received 51 votes, Logo #1 is a tight second with 49 votes.
Congratulations to Kunal Mankodiya, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, USA, for creating such a beautiful logo!

Britton Chance Award
SPIE has announced that David Boas will receive the 2016 SPIE Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award.
The award will be presented at the Photonic West meeting in San Francisco February 13 2016.

Ted Huppert has announced the public release of a new Matlab-based toolbox for fNIRS.
Sungho Tak released an fNIRS toolbox update for the NIR-SPM software.
Both are freely available for download.

 

image007Summer conferences highlights
More than 30 abstracts on work using fNIRS were presented at the OHBM meeting in Honolulu. Hawaii and a session on fNIRS was held at the EMBS annual meeting in Milan, Italy. With David Boas as program chair, the Brain meeting in Vancouver, Canada also included several fNIRS abstracts.

 

image005fNIRS in Developing Countries
Clare Elwell and her team have received Phase II funding for their Grand Challenge Exploration project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to use fNIRS and other methods to assess brain development in UK and Gambian infants.
Congratulations to Clare and her team!

Congratulations also to Joe Culver who has received a Gate Grand Challenge Exploration Phase I Award.
Mari Franceschini & Ivy Lin have started a collaboration with Dr. Benjamin Warf and the Cure Children’s Hospital of Uganda. FDNIRS-DCS measurements are ongoing in Mbale, Uganda.

Untitled-2New NIRS devices
Politecnico di Milano, together with ICFO and some other partners in Europe, is working on a project called “BabyLux – An Optical Neuro-Monitor of Cerebral Oxygen Metabolism and Blood Flow for Neonatology”.

ISS has introduced MetaOx, the first commercially available combined FDNIRS-DCS instrument for monitoring blood volume, blood flow, hemoglobin oxygenation and oxygen metabolism non-invasively in adults and infants.

fNIRS 2016 
The 2016 conference will take place in central Paris October 13 – 16, 2016.
As with past conferences, there will be a day-long course prior to the start of the conference on Thursday, October 13. The conference is being co-chaired by Judit Gervain and Joe Culver.

CSD 2015
A pre-conference on Early development, conceptual change, and continuity: Insights from cognitive neuroscience will be held on October 8, 2015 in Columbus, OH, before the Ninth Biennial Meeting of the Cognitive Development Society (October 9 & 10 in Columbus, OH, USA).

IAMPOV 2015
The upcoming “Innovations and Applications in Monitoring Perfusion, Oxygenation and Ventilation“ (IAMPOV) symposium will be hosted by St. Luke’s International University in Tokyo, Japan (October 2-4 2015). In addition to the interactive academic venue, Proceedings will be published in the journal of Anesthesia & Analgesia. Further details can be found at: IAMPOV.org

SPIE Photonic West
Photonic West, the largest laser, photonics, and biomedical optics conference, will be held in San Francisco February 13 -18 2016.

OSA Biomedical Optics Meeting
The Biennial topical meeting on “Translating Biomedical Optics from the Scientific Bench to Clinical Practice” will be held on April 25 – 28, 2016 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

SPIE NPH
The Society for fNIRS has adopted Neurophotonics as its official journal. Please consider submitting your next fNIRS article there.  The journal is currently available free of charge until the end of 2015. Many articles will remain open access after that. Members of SfNIRS can obtain a membership rate for subscribing to the journal through SPIE using the SfNIRS member-only form provided here. Also, you can sign up to receive twice monthly email messages about new articles published in Neurophotonics. See the instructions here.

Neurophotonics – Call for Papers
Please see the call for papers for the upcoming special section on “Clinical Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Imaging of the Brain”.  The submission deadline is December 1, 2015. More information can be found on the journal webpage. Note that the journal Neurophotonics is the official journal for SfNIRS.
