Communication Committee

The role of the Communication Committee (CommComm) is to facilitate and enhance communications between the society and the membership by timely bringing the fNIRS community (scientists, clinicians, industries) the latest relevant information on the development and usage of optical neuroimaging techniques and modalities whether this information is generated from the society itself, the community or externally.

Education Committee

The mission of the Education Committee is to support the training of the next generation of fNIRS researchers and the continued methodological advancement of all our members. To this end, we will organize our own training sessions and promote other educational materials. These trainings and materials will be related to the use, applications, data analysis and interpretation of fNIRS techniques. Across these topics, we will particularly focus on trainings that advance the sensitivity, rigor and reproducibility of fNIRS and that support the connection and communication within our vibrant researcher community. We will constantly evolve our offerings to best suit the needs of our community and will offer trainings in a number of different forms (as part of our biennial conference and outside of that time, in person and virtually). We will also work alongside the DEI committee to provide equitable training to increase access in populations of researchers who have been historically under-represented in this field. We also pledge to support diverse voices in those who are leading the training(s) and promote inclusion with regards to which methodological skills and approaches are valued.

Standardization and Open Science Committee

Our committee aims to foster a transparent, reliable, and collaborative future for the global fNIRS community. Our mission is to establish, disseminate, and promote best practices, standards, and open-science principles that ensure rigor, reproducibility, and interoperability across all aspects of fNIRS research and development.

We envision functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a universally adopted, rigorously validated, and openly shared neuroimaging technology that empowers scientific discovery, advances clinical care, and enables brain monitoring in everyday life — enhancing knowledge, health, and well-being worldwide. Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee

The Society for NIRS is committed to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to raising awareness, guiding learning, and supporting those members who might be marginalized or stereotyped. As an international organization it is understood that issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion are not the same for all countries and we seek to represent and address this international range of issues. The committee is grounded by basic values that include 1) the highest standards in science, engineering, and clinical practice; and 2) the commitment to welcome all members of the NIRS community regardless of ethnic or cultural background or personal identity into our rapidly-expanding field.

Strategic Vision Committee

Our vision for the society is to be a global home for functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) serving both the scientific community and the public, fostering fNIRS as a high-performance, naturalistic, neuroimaging or biological imaging modality that drives transformative scientific research with high societal impact.
This committee aims at promoting fNIRS by uniting developers and users and disseminating fNIRS capabilities and value to the broader scientific community and the public. To advance and share knowledge, we engage researchers across industry, government, and academia. To enhance performance, we develop standards for data structures, sharing, processing, and instrumentation. To deepen societal impact, we foster neuroimaging paradigms that address biomedical and biological questions. To sustain progress in the field, we train the next generation of fNIRS scientists.
