The launch of the Society for fNIRS and the third biennial fNIRS meeting, both in October, 2014, offered an opportunity to reflect on the histories of both the technique and the community. In an article on its website, the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital traces these histories and how they ultimately led to the birth of the society.
