Online Courses

The Education Committee of the Society for functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy offers free, self-paced online courses for anyone interested in learning fNIRS, from students starting their first project to researchers coming from other fields. Enrollment only requires a free account on fnirs.org.

Our first course, Introduction to fNIRS, explains what fNIRS measures, how the signal relates to brain activity and to the rest of the body, how instruments and experiments are designed, how data are processed, and when fNIRS is the right tool for a question. It is available in English, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese.

How it works

  • Free for everyone. Create an account, choose a course below, and click Enroll Course.
  • Self-paced. Lessons are text, figures, interactive simulations, and videos, and your progress is saved, so you can stop and return at any time.
  • Short quizzes. Each unit ends with a quiz to check your understanding, and you can retake it if you do not pass.

Courses on diffuse optics theory and on fNIRS data processing are in preparation. Questions and suggestions are welcome through the Education Committee.
